Air Force Common Admission Test
AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission Test and is also referred to as the Indian Air Force Exam. AFCAT is a national level competitive exam conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to select officers for all its branches, except for the medical and dental branches. The AFCAT is conducted twice every year, once in February, and the other time in August. The IAF recruits its officers broadly under three branches, they are, the Flying Branch, the Technical Branch, and the Ground Duty Branch.
The Flying Branch consists of Fighters, Transports, and Helicopters. The Technical Branch deals with the Mechanical and Electronic aspects, while the Ground Duty Branch comprises of Administration, Accounts, Logistics, Education and Meteorology.
There are two types of commissions under which a candidate can apply for the Indian Air Force, the Permanent Commission, and the Short Service Commission (SSC). The Permanent Commission refers to a career in the Indian Air Force until retirement. The short service commission means a limited period career in the IAF. The term for the SSC is 14 years, and it will not be extended upon completion. By writing the AFCAT, one can join either the Permanent Commission or the Short Service Commission of the IAF.
HOW TO APPLY FOR AFCAT Exam
AFCAT is conducted twice a year (in the month of February and August). The advertisement for the same is published in the months of December and June respectively. Candidates must apply online on www.careerairforce.nic.in
EXAM PATTERN
The AFCAT Question Paper consists of 100 questions and the time duration is two hours Each of these questions carries 3 marks. The exam includes negative marking. For every wrong answer, the candidate loses 1 mark.

Eligibility
Flying Branch
Age: 20 to 24 years at the time of commencement. If the candidate has a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the DGCA of India, the age limit is relaxed up to 26 years.
Education: Graduation (min 3 years) in any discipline with min 60% marks and have passed Maths and Physics as subject at 10+2 level B.E/ B.Tech from a recognized University with min 60% marks.
Min Height: 162.5 cms with correlated weight.
Min Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other.
Technical Branch
Age: 20-26 years at the time of commencement.
Education: Four year degree qualification and have cleared Sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with 60% marks
Min Height: 157.5 cms with correlated weight, Women – 152 cms
Groud Duty Branch
Age: 20-26 years at the time of commencement.
Education: Graduate degree (Min 3 years) in any discipline with min 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with a min of 60% marks or equivalent. for Administration and Logistics posts, or B.Com (Min 3 years) with min 60% marks for Accounts posts, or MBA / MCA or MA / M Sc degree in English / Physics / Mathematics / Chemistry / Statistics / International relations / International studies / Defence studies / Psychology / Computer Science / IT / Management / Mass Communication / Journalism / Public Relation with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate all paper put together in Post Graduation (Minimum two year programme) and 60% marks in graduation for Education posts
Min Height: 157.5 cms with correlated weight, women – 152 cms
Syllabus
The AFCAT syllabus can broadly be divided into four topics, they are, General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning & Military Aptitude Test. These topics are further divided into sub-topics
